3D technical animation: explain a product without confusion
Principles, stages and narrative choices for technical animation that supports sales, installation and training.Begin with the question
Good technical animation does not show everything. It selects what the viewer must understand. Installation, flow, maintenance and commercial advantage each require a different structure.
The technical storyboard
Even a short sequence benefits from a storyboard. Each shot should carry one clear piece of information, and the camera should move only when movement improves spatial understanding.
- Product context and orientation
- Main action or transformation
- Detail of the relevant component
- Result or advantage
- Closing view of the complete product
Credible movement
Timing, acceleration and hierarchy make motion readable. An exploded view should not feel like a random explosion: every component follows a deliberate, comprehensible order.
Delivery and reuse
A well-planned production can generate horizontal video, vertical edits, exhibition loops, still frames and short training extracts. Deciding these formats during the brief prevents rebuilding at the end.
FREQUENT QUESTIONS
Essential answers.
01How long should technical animation be?
As long as needed to understand the action without repetition. A single function may take seconds; a complete process may take minutes.
02Do we need labels and arrows?
Only when they add information that motion cannot communicate by itself, and they must remain readable on small screens.
03Can the render model be reused?
Often yes, but components may need separating and internal parts or animation hierarchies may need to be built.
